In this episode, Justine is joined by her husband of 16 years, Joshua Evirs, for a conversation around how he has spent his entire life breaking down white solidarity and fighting white supremacy in his own unique way.

Josh takes the listener on a journey through his childhood and shares experiences that have shaped him into who he is today. He showcases how generational social conditioning can create racism as young as 6th grade and what can happen if you break white solidarity. He also shares great examples of how our unconscious biases can shape us and how if we are not careful we can attack the things we don't understand.

This episode will give you insight into how our society and white supremacy creates us vs. them mentality if we are not paying attention to our own biases as we grow as human beings. Josh's story displays how we must go farther than educating ourselves to fight racism. We must go out out of our way to experience other races, cultures, gender, and sexual orientations to truly have compassion and the ability to break the cycle within the communities we live and work in.

He references his favorite book, Maniac Magee in the show which can be found here: https://www.amazon.com/Maniac-Magee-Jerry-Spinelli/dp/0316809063

At the end of the podcast, Justine talks about a book called White Fragility, by Robin Diangelo and defines White Solidarity for the listener and further connects the dots for the listener on how Josh's courage to break White Solidarity is truly a tiny moment of courage that can promote a lot of change in the world and carry on generation after generation.

As always here are Justine's weekly podcast & book recommendations she would like to share with you.

After this interview, Josh recommended a great video that explains his us vs. them deeper from Trevor Noah's point of view. Justine is also recommending this clip because the way he talks about content creation aligns really well with how we produce the Protecting Courage Podcast on a weekly basis. https://www.cbsnews.com/video/trevor-noah-responding-to-the-moment/
